How Does a Powder Coating Gun Work?

How Does a Powder Coating Gun Work?

Powder Supply:

The powder is fed into the gun from a hopper or container. The powder can be gravity-fed or supplied by a pressure feeder.

Electrostatic Charging:

The Powder Coating Gun contains an electrode that charges the powder particles as they pass through. This electrode can be a corona discharge electrode or a triboelectric charging mechanism.

Corona Discharge: A high-voltage electrode creates an electrostatic field that charges the powder particles.

Triboelectric Charging: Friction between the powder and the Powder Coating Gun's internal components generates a static charge.

Air Flow:

Compressed air is used to transport the charged powder particles through the gun and towards the substrate. The air flow can be adjusted to control the spray pattern and density.

Spray Pattern:

The gun nozzle can be adjusted to change the spray pattern, allowing for precise application to different areas of the part.

Some Powder Coating Guns have interchangeable nozzles to accommodate various spray patterns and part geometries.

Grounding:

The substrate (part to be coated) is grounded to attract the charged powder particles. This ensures that the powder adheres evenly and efficiently.
